Gynecomastia refers to the abnormal enlargement of the male breast. It typically arises without a clearly identifiable cause and can cause significant social and psychological difficulties, particularly in younger men. Prof. Dr. Cengiz Eser treats gynecomastia in Adana, Turkey, with individualized surgical planning following comprehensive assessment.
Causes of Gynecomastia
Approximately 90% of gynecomastia cases are physiological in origin. Gynecomastia occurring during puberty is physiological, typically resolving naturally within 2–3 years without treatment. In other cases, anabolic steroids, certain cardiac medications, antidepressants, hormonal imbalances, or obesity may be contributory factors.
How Is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?
Pre-operative Assessment
Hormone profile and underlying causes are evaluated before surgery. Fatty tissue-dominant cases may be treated with liposuction alone; glandular tissue requires surgical excision.
Liposuction
For fatty tissue-dominant cases, liposuction removes the excess fat with minimal scarring.
Surgical Excision
Where glandular breast tissue is present, a small periareolar incision allows removal of the glandular component.
Anaesthesia
Can be performed under local or general anaesthesia.
Recovery Process
- No overnight hospitalization when performed under local anaesthesia
- Compression vest worn post-operatively as directed
- Light activities resumed within 1 week
- Final results visible within a few months
